What do people live for? There may be a job and financial security, but there are many peoplesearching for the meaning of their life. How can they find it?
Usually, we focus on ourselves. “What do I hope for? What do I really wish to do?” However, according to the top selling book, the Bible, it tells us that we will find the starting point at a different place. It tells us to start from God who created us.
Do you know a German gentleman called Schweitzer? He grew up listening to the Bible as he was a little boy. He was also good at playing the organ. Later, he attended a college, and became a teacher. One day he wondered “I am blessed with much talents. I wonder if it is proper to use these talents just for my own benefit?” He thought about it over and over, but he could not find the answer. One day when he was 21 years old, he found one scripture in the Bible. “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matt. 10:39).” “Whoever uses his life for himself will lose it, and whoever gives away his life to me (Jesus Christ) will receive it as his own.”
Then he realized. “Now I see. I should not use the given talents just for myself. I must be using those talents for Jesus who saved me from sins. My talents were given for serving people who Jesus loves.” “Let me spend my time for studying and learning music until I become 30 years old, then I will become a servant of people.” After that, he received two different degrees, and also found an organ. “People in Africa are suffering with diseases. They need a missionary with medical skills.” He thought “this is it,” and continued to study medicine for another 6 years. Finally, he became a medical doctor and got married, then departed to Africa.
He lived in countries just below the equator for 50 years, serving people there. (He also had experienced 2 World Wars during that time.) He did not charge much for his medical treatment. But he returned to Europe frequently to play at concerts and to talk at seminars to earn enough funding to build hospitals. For his effort, many people were treated and healed, and they found joy and peace of knowing Christ. His life was full of joy and satisfaction.
We can find the meaning of our life in the Bible. You may achieve what you want, but it might not provide you with satisfaction. I also found the satisfaction of my life in the Bible. I wish that you will also find one.
